Ministries

In the 1800’s when the first ministries were formed, they were called auxiliaries or clubs. They were established by the Joint Board and worked under the auspices of the pastor. As the church membership grew, more support services were needed to meet the needs of a growing church. During that time auxiliaries such as The Missionaries, The Nurses Unit, The Usher Board, and The Sunday School were formed. They were specifically designed to assist the church in “kingdom building” and to provide financial support for the church.

During the next few decades, other auxiliaries started socially in members’ homes. Even though many of these groups were called clubs, they were always Christ-centered. Their agendas included issues of the church and ways they could be used for support to the church community. In doing so, they were able to socialize, to fellowship, and to create a cohesive bond of support for the church and enhance the spiritual growth of the auxiliary.

As the church moved into the new millennium, Pastor Wilson saw the need to change the name from auxiliaries to ministries to bring the church in line with modern thinking and to encourage member and ministries to expand their evangelizing and outreach programs.

Today there are more than 25 ministries in the church. Through the ministries, the church celebrates the following events throughout the calendar year: the church’s anniversary, pastor’s anniversary, ministry anniversaries, Officers’ Day, African American History Month, and Family Day. Family Day was initiated statewide by the late Troy Brailey who was a member of the Maryland State Senate for many years. He introduced legislation to declare the first Sunday in August Family Day throughout the state of Maryland. Leadenhall has made it a weekend celebration with the Church Picnic on Saturday before Family Day.

Men & Women’s Day is one of the church’s largest celebrations. It is held on the 3rd Sunday in November each year. The celebration sometimes includes a prayer breakfast or luncheon, Friday night fellowships, and guest speakers from other churches throughout the region. The first Women’s Day was held in 1924 with Men’s Day following in 1931. In 1993, the decision was made to host a joint celebration, where the men and women of Leadenhall come together to plan and organize this event.

Under Pastor Gwynn’s leadership there is an increased emphasis on Bible Study and Christian Education. Bible study classes are held, for all ages, on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. The church now enjoys has a stronger affiliation with the Maryland National Conference on Christian Education. The church continues to provide Sunday school for all ages, midweek prayer service, youth ministry opportunities, senior adult ministry opportunities, women’s ministries, community service opportunities, and mission involvement. The Youth Ministry, which includes the Youth Usher Board, the Youth and Young Adult Choir and the Youth Courtesy Ministry, is known throughout the city. The Youth Ushers and the Youth Choir are often invited to other churches to participate in worship services. There are approximately 40 young people in the ministry and they represent one of the largest youth departments in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The church is proud of their spiritual growth and development.
